Cytopathology

Cytopathology is a branch of pathology that deals with the study of cells and their microscopic examination to diagnose diseases. It involves the analysis of individual cells and their structures, as well as the interpretation of cellular changes and abnormalities. Cytopathology plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and management of various conditions, including cancer.

Cytopathology is commonly used to investigate diseases involving a wide range of body sites, often to aid in the diagnosis of cancer but also in the diagnosis of some infectious diseases and other inflammatory conditions.

Techniques in Cytopathology:
  • Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy.
  • Liquid-based cytology (LBC).
  • Brushings, washings, and smears.
  • Image-guided procedures (e.g., ultrasound-guided FNA).
  • Molecular and genetic testing in cytopathology.

Various Diagnostic Applications of Cytopathology are:
  • Detection and evaluation of cancer.
  • Screening and early detection of cervical cancer (Pap smear).
  • Diagnosis and monitoring of thyroid diseases.
  • Evaluation of effusions (pleural, peritoneal, etc.).
  • Diagnosis of infectious diseases.
  • Assessment of body fluids (urine, cerebrospinal fluid, etc.).
  • Ancillary techniques in cytopathology (immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry).
